Goffstown www.graniteymca.org June 1, 2022 - May 31, 2023 ANNUAL REPORT 20232023It has been my honor since July 2022 to be the first female CEO for this amazing community organization. My time with The Granite YMCA began in late fall of 2009 under former CEO, Hal Jordan. When Hal offered me an opportunity to move from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire to become the Executive Director for the YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown, this was to be a stepping stone for professional development and an opportunity to learn under the leadership of some outstanding Y professionals and volunteers. What my family and I thought would be a place to live the next 5-6 years has fortu- itously become the place we have proudly called home for the last 14 years. The Granite Y became more than a place of employment. It is where our family developed and fostered deep friendships like many other transplanted families. Establishing a sense of belonging is a necessary form of bonding for individuals and families to their new communities. Knowing your neighbor is much less likely to be a primary relationship in many people’s lives today. The isolation that many in our communities are experiencing is a growing national contributor to the escalating mental health crisis seen in our own families, communities, and across the country. Despite the concerns that exist with the growing levels of loneli- ness and isolation in our communities, the Y is that third place for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. It is a trusted location where one can feel connected and valued each day. As you review the impact of donors, volunteers, staff and community stakeholders from the past year, I encourage you to look beyond the highlighted activity and to recognize, in the smiling faces, the confidence among all ages that is a natural benefit when one experiences a sense of belonging in an organization like the Y where all people matter! Thank you to each individual who has contributed their time, trea- sure and talent to invest in The Granite YMCA and to support keep- ing a third community space available for all. Gratefully, Michele Shepard Chief Executive Officer Dear Granite Y Community, As we reflect on the past year and delve into our Annual Report, I am filled with gratitude and a deep sense of pride in the journey we've shared together. It has been an incredible honor to serve as the Chief Volunteer Officer alongside our dedicated board volunteers, the remarkable Michele Sheppard, and the outstanding leadership team at The Granite YMCA. The essence of community is woven into every aspect of our Granite Y story. Established in 1852, this organization has been a beacon of unity and belonging for countless individuals and families, including my own. It's been inspiring to witness how this space has evolved beyond a mere workplace into a profound connection hub, a true third place for many. The sentiments shared by our new CEO encapsulate the essence of what The Granite Y represents. It's not just an institution; it's a nurturing ground where relationships blossom, friendships deepen, and bonds are formed. In a world where isolation seems to prevail, our Y stands as a steadfast safe space, embracing people of all back- grounds, abilities, and ages. As you flip through the pages of the Annual Report, I urge you to take Michele’s advice and see beyond the statistics and activities. Take a moment to recognize the sense of belonging reflected in the faces of every individual touched by our Y. Here, in this space, everyone matters. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each person who has generously contributed their time, resources, and skills to uphold The Granite YMCA's mission. Your dedication ensures that our community always has this vital third space, a sanctuary where connections flourish and individuals thrive. As we move forward, let us continue to foster this environment of inclusivity and support. Together, let's reaffirm our commitment to strengthening bonds, nurturing relationships, and creating a space where everyone feels valued and connected. Each day, children as young as six weeks through high school teens are nurtured, educated and engaged with teams of dedicated and inspiring Y staff leaders. Despite the challenges related to a shrinking workforce in New Hampshire, this past year, The Granite YMCA was able to increase our workforce by 14%. The investment into restructuring and expanding our child care, camp and Y Youth Matters front line and executive staffing levels has provided critical talent and depth to ensure The Granite YMCA can deliver quality, fun and trusted care and learning for all youth coming to the Y. We are proud and grateful that we have been able to expand our Power Scholars summer learning program again this past year to support children as young as 5 through 16 with free summer learning, enrichment, and job readiness trainings. Thanks to dedicated supporters invested in ensuring all students have access to summer experience programs such as Power Scholars, Y day camps and overnight camps continue to provide opportunities for youth to increase their self-confidence and to establish lifelong friendships. This has been the best thing to happen to me in a long time. I am enjoying all the people in the class and the instructor. I have lost 4 lbs and I’m feeling good. It’s been a long time since I’ve had company over, and with this class, it’s like having 15 people in my living room once a week. Craig, is a dedicated and loving grandparent who has been raising his 9-year-old grandchild named Jack since he was 4.5 years old. Jack arrived with a complex set of health issues—Type 1 Diabetes, Celiac Disease, and PTSD stemming from his past. Initially, he struggled with trust and harbored many fears. To ensure Jack felt secure and loved, Craig invested substantial efforts in creating a stable and safe home environment. Seeking profes- sional help, he enrolled Jack in therapy, which led to the recommendation of the PASTA Program—a community that supports guardians in similar situations. Craig found solace in being among individuals who understood the unique challenges of rais- ing grandchildren. This newfound community dispelled his previous feelings of isolation and loneliness. Participating in PASTA allowed him to share his experiences, listen to others facing similar chal- lenges, and gain insights that proved beneficial not only for himself but also for Jack. The cama- raderie and shared wisdom in the group offered a profound sense of support and understanding, proving to be a crucial aspect of their journey. He had seen this on tv and was excited to be able to try some of the activities he saw on “Ninja Kids”. Since camp, Theo has fallen in love with the sport of Ninja. He has gained confidence and independence in an athletic activity that will benefit his health and self-esteem. We have now signed him up for a weekly Ninja class where he is continuing to grow his skills. - Parent of Camp Mi-Te-Na Annually, The Granite YMCA Board of Directors seek to ensure that YMCA assets are well maintained and updated to meet safety and quality standards. During the past year, we invested a total of $1,450,000 in capital improvements and new construction. The YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown indoor pools now boast state-of-the-art filtration and heating systems, enhancing the overall aquatic experience and substantially improving operational efficiencies. The Camp Halfmoon pool was completely replaced to include an expanded teaching section, five lanes for recreation, lap swimming and competitive swim team events and a new Splash pad feature that welcomes non-swimmers and young children to enjoy water play elements on the expanded deck. This project was supported by numerous generous donors to ensure the several hundred campers who attend Camp Halfmoon can enjoy fun and safe water experiences for decades to come. Our two overnight camps received renovations and additions to the longstanding and beloved camp experience that thousands of campers have enjoyed for over 100 years. Camp Foss, traditionally for girls, introduced a new Ninja Course station for campers and completed necessary infrastructure upgrades to foster a safer and more comfortable environment for campers including additional accessible camper cabins and bath houses. Camp Mi-Te-Na, traditionally a boys camp, has undergone similar enhancements with upgraded bath houses, refurbished courts, and an epic Ninja Course, contributing to an enriched and stealthy camping experience. These, and several other capital improvements, collectively reflect a commitment to providing top-notch inclusive amenities and ensuring the longevity of these recreational spaces for the camp and community’s enjoyment for decades to come. 7www.graniteymca.org The Granite YMCA creates a community where all are welcome and builds a healthy spirit, mind and body based on the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
